Description

The Military Grid Coordinate System was developed by the U.S. military in 1947 and is used in GIS applications. It divides the earth into 60 north-south segments called zones which are divided into squares 6 degrees east/west and 8 degrees north-south. Each square has a two-letter identifier. Within a square, distances are measured in meters from the east boundary and from the north boundary.
